Dear Charlie,

With all of the recent headlines about “Plastic Surgery Gone Wrong” or “Awful Celebrity Plastic Surgery,” the media seems to be painting plastic surgery in a bad light. Is cosmetic surgery really so bad? How do the surgeons at Marina Plastic Surgery Associates feel about this?

Sincerely,

Jenna

Hi Jenna,

Thanks for your questions. I have to agree– I’ve been seeing a lot of those tabloids lately discussing celebrity plastic surgery and almost all of it is negative. While the media might think that it’s more entertaining to talk about something negative, they are failing to recognize the great things plastic surgery can do for a person and their life.

After discussing this issue with Santa Monica area plastic surgeon Dr. Grant Stevens at our practice, one of the first things he mentioned was that plastic surgery is divided into cosmetic procedures and reconstructive procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cosmetic procedures are defined as reshaping the normal structures of the body in order to improve a patient’s appearance and self-image. Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve functions, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance.

Feeling good about the way you look can have great benefits. It can improve happiness and the quality of a person’s life. Yet this is the very thing all of those tabloids avoid…the positive story. Perhaps gossip magazines and Web sites should spend a little more time featuring stories on how plastic surgery has improved lives – there are a lot of these stories happening every day. What do you think?

Hugs,

Charlie
