Hi Charlie,

I have had problems breathing for many years because of a deviated septum, according to my doctor. I also hate the way my nose looks. My doctor suggested that I consider a nose job. I want the real scoop on what’s involved.

Thanks,

Margie

Hi Margie,

Great question! And I really appreciate the fact that you’re taking the time to learn more about nose surgery, which is technically known as rhinoplasty. At our practice in Los Angeles, rhinoplasty is one of our most popular procedures. We perform two different types: cosmetic, which is designed for people who, like you wrote, “hate the way” their nose looks, and functional, to correct breathing problems such as your deviated septum.

However, many of our “nose job” patients, like you, do have both functional and cosmetic reasons for wanting the surgery, such as a deviated septum that results in a blocked nasal airway and a large bump on the nose.

In most cases, rhinoplasty is outpatient surgery, and your surgeon will use local or general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours, occasionally slightly longer. In cases such as yours, the functional aspect of the surgery involves repairing the internal features of the nose so that it is easier to breathe. The surgeon will, as needed, also reshape the nose to improve its appearance, hiding the incisions inside your nose or along its natural creases, so that after you’ve recovered, no one will notice them. And the results, our patients typically tell us, make them feel and look much more attractive. Plus, in the case of functional improvements, they can literally breathe easier!

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Charlie
