Teens & Rhinoplasty: Good or Bad?
At some point or another, we’ve all experienced it. Being bullied or teased for a physical trait can be hurtful and can have devastating effects when growing up and going through your teenage years. Feeling good about yourself as a teenager seems next to impossible when it appears that everyone is trying to bring you down. In my experience, this is one of the main reasons why teens consider plastic surgery.
According to the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), rhinoplasty was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure for teens in 2009. While many people may not approve of teenagers getting any kind of plastic surgery, our Los Angeles rhinoplasty surgeons have personally seen the difference nose surgery specifically can make in the lives of younger patients.
Rhinoplasty may be appropriate for teenagers who are at least 16 years old and whose facial growth is complete. Ensuring that the nose is fully developed is very important because performing surgery before this point can interfere with the growth of the nose, and alter the results of the procedure.
Another important factor when considering teenage rhinoplasty is the maturity of the patient. While cosmetic surgery can have many benefits including increasing self-confidence, no cosmetic procedure should be considered an easy way to “fix” issues such as low self-esteem.
As a whole, I’d say that teenage rhinoplasty can be beneficial, but it does depend on the patient. What are your opinions on teen rhinoplasty, or teenage cosmetic surgery in general for that matter?
