A More Natural Look with Teardrop Implants?

Charlie,

I’ve been researching breast implants because I’ve been unhappy with my breast size for some time. I don’t want to look like a Barbie doll, but I want my breasts to be larger. I stumbled across some information about teardrop shaped breast implants and I was wondering if they would look more natural than regular implants.

Thanks,

Teresa

Dear Teresa,

There are going to be many questions to answer about your breast implants prior to your breast enlargement surgery. Implant shape (teardrop vs. round) is just one of them. You’ll also have to assess size, shell texture, placement, and incision location. All of these factors together will determine how satisfied you are with your result….but for now, let’s focus on implant shape.

Teardrop Shaped Implants

Teardrop (or anatomical) shaped implants may provide a more natural look for some women because the majority of the implant’s weight is in the lower half, thereby adding more fullness to the lower part of the breast rather than the upper part. Too much fullness on the upper part of the breast is what often strikes us as looking fake.

But here’s the catch: there is some risk that anatomical shaped implants could shift in the pocket, creating an unnatural look. Choosing a skilled surgeon is the best way to prevent this result. Another safeguard against shifting is that teardrop implants generally have a textured shell. This helps to keep the implant in its proper position. Also, your surgeon may place the implant under the muscle, which may also help to prevent shifting.

Round Implants

Round implants are the norm for breast augmentation these days. They achieve a full breast shape with plenty of projection and cleavage. If they shift in the pocket, breast shape remains unchanged. A few women with round implants say that people can tell they’ve had breast augmentation…but this again goes to the quality of the surgeon and the choices that were made.

At Marina Plastic Surgery Associates in Los Angeles, you have many breast implant options and our board-certified plastic surgeons will take the time to carefully guide you in your choice.
