Breast Augmentation Considerations

Dear Charlie,

My 18-year-old daughter, Natalie, says she just wants one thing for her high school graduation gift: breast augmentation! I’m proud of her for graduating and getting into college – but Natalie claims she’ll be so self-conscious about her appearance that she can’t enjoy her college life. She’s a size 32A (and still wears the style of bra designed for pre-teens!). What do you think?

Thanks,

Bettina

Hi Bettina,

You sound like a wonderful mother, and I congratulate you on your daughter’s educational successes! I appreciate your concern. While breast enlargement isn’t right for every woman, breast augmentation in Los Angeles has provided a way for thousands of women to feel more self-confident and happy about their appearance.

A few considerations for you and your daughter to discuss, woman-to-woman:

  • The type of implant is one of the most important decisions involved in this procedure. Saline and silicone breast implants both have advantages and disadvantages, and they differ in material and consistency. Saline breast implants are available for women age 18 and older. Some Women say that saline implants feel less natural than silicone breast implants. Because silicone implants are pre-filled with a gel that mimics the feel of human fat, we have many patients who prefer this option, saying that silicone breast implants feel and look more like natural breast tissue. BUT silicone breast implants are available only for women age 22 and older. As a result, your daughter would be limited to saline breast implants only, unless she chooses to wait a few years. If she would feel more comfortable talking with a female surgeon, Dr. Michelle Spring can sit down with your daughter and discuss her concerns and goals.

As you know and may want to discuss with your daughter, women’s feelings about their bodies and their cosmetic goals for themselves change as they mature. In other words: she might want very large breasts now, but that may change as her interests and priorities shift.

I hope this helps you and your daughter to make the right choice. Remember: it’s important for you and Natalie to discuss your concerns with a knowledgeable plastic surgeon to determine if it’s the appropriate procedure – and the right time – for Natalie.

Cheers,

Charlie

Thank you for your rich commentary Charlie. I meet many women in similar situations as Bettina and her daughter. My advice is from the heart but commentary like this from you Charlie is a great resource. Saving this post now…
