Women and men who come to our Los Angeles practice often ask about liposuction. It seems that while liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States, there is still some confusion about the details of the procedure and what exactly it entails. Here are 5 simple facts about liposuction that can help give you a clear picture about the procedure, and help you decide whether it can benefit you:

  1. Liposuction is not a substitute for eating a proper diet and exercising. It is a common misconception that people can come in and “suck out” fat that they don’t want, even if they haven’t tried working out or eating healthy. In fact, the ideal liposuction patient is actually close to their target weight, and has pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.
  2. Liposuction can be performed on almost all areas of the body, including the face! While some may think that liposuction is only meant for love handles or that lower belly “pooch,” liposuction can actually be used on multiple places of the body. It is commonly used underneath the chin to provide smooth facial contours.
  3. Fat removal is permanent in the area that was treated. After a liposuction treatment, the fat cells that are removed will not grow back or increase in number. However, it is possible to gain fat elsewhere in the body. It is important to eat a proper diet and continue to exercise, even after you’ve had liposuction.
  4. There are several liposuction techniques that are designed to give you optimal results. Liposuction is no “one size fits all” procedure. There are several different methods that can be used, depending on which is right for the patient.
  5. Typically general anesthesia is used, but local anesthesia may need to be used as well. Anesthesia choices are based upon the patient and extent of the area. Your surgeon should decide which form of anesthesia will be best for you during your consultation.

Liposuction can provide positive results for several women and men. One of the most important things to remember before a liposuction procedure is to have realistic goals.
